Self-review

What a self-review is, why employee reflection matters in a review process, and how to make self-assessments more specific and useful.

A self-review is an employee’s own assessment of their work over a defined period. It usually covers accomplishments, challenges, priorities, collaboration, and areas for growth ahead of a formal performance review.

Self-reviews are valuable because employees often hold context that nobody else sees clearly. They know which work was harder than it looked, which tradeoffs mattered, and where they felt strongest or most stretched.

Why self-reviews matter in performance management

Self-reviews give employees an active role in the performance process instead of making them passive recipients of a manager’s judgment. That tends to produce better context, fewer surprises, and more honest conversations.

They are especially helpful when work is complex or distributed across many projects. Managers may see outcomes, but employees can often explain the constraints, hidden work, or decisions that shaped those outcomes. That context can improve both written reviews and later calibration.

Self-reviews also surface how employees see their own growth. The themes they raise can inform development plans, future goal setting, and 1:1 coaching.

What good self-reviews look like

Good self-reviews are specific, evidence-based, and balanced. They should name concrete accomplishments, explain impact, and acknowledge genuine challenges or growth areas without becoming either self-promotion or self-criticism.

They also work better when employees do not start from a blank page. Notes from the year, feedback from peers, and reminders from past 1:1s all make it easier to write something accurate. That is one reason a running record of work is so helpful before the review cycle begins.

How Windmill supports self-reviews

In Windmill’s performance reviews workflow, Windy can gather context from tools, past meetings, and feedback to help employees remember what they actually did during the period. That reduces the common problem where people forget important work until after they submit.

Windmill also offers a free self-review generator for people who need help organizing accomplishments into a clear narrative. Used well, that kind of support speeds up the writing process without taking judgment away from the employee.
